|
| Screensavers |
A utility that prevents a CRT from being etched by an unchanging image. After a specified duration of time without keyboard or mouse input, it blanks the screen or displays moving objects. Pressing a key or moving the mouse restores the screen.
It would actually take many hours to burn in an image on today's color monitors. However, the entertainment provided by these utilities (swimming fish, flying toasters, etc.) has made them very popular. |

A tool for searching information on the Internet by topic. Popular engines include InfoSeek, Inktomi and Web Crawler. |

|
| Server |
One half of the client-server protocol, runs on a networked computer and responds to requests submitted by the client. Your World Wide Web brower is a client of a World Wide Web server. |

| Shareware |
Software available for downloading on the Internet that you can try before you buy. Users who want to continue to use the program are expected to pay a registration fee (rarely more than U.S. $100). In return they get documentation, technical support, and any updated versions. |

| SHTML |
(Server-parsed HTML) A file extension used to identify HTML pages that contain server-side includes. Server-parsed means that the server scans the page for commands that require additional insertion before the page is sent to the user. |

| Signature |
A personal tag automatically appended to an email message. May be short, such as the author's name, or quite long, such as a favourite quote. |

A single Web page or collection of related Web pages. |

| SLIP |
Serial Line Internet Protocol - a protocol allowing you to use a dial-up connection as an Internet connection. Similar to a PPP connection, though far less stable. |

| SME |
not a character from Peter Pan but an abbreviation fror Small and Mediam (sized) Enterprise(s). SME's are defined by the European Commission as independent enterprises that have fewer than 250 employees, and an annual turnover not exceeding €40/£25 million |

| SMTP |
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - a protocol dictating how email messages are exchanged over the Internet. |

| Snail mail |
Regular postal mail. Refers to its slowness in relation to electronic mail. |

| Solutions Provider |
An organisation that provides a mix of consulting services, custom programming and hardware to solve a customer's information problem. The hardware may be manufactured by the company, purchased from a third party or merely recommended. "Solutions" implies a range of custom-tailored services rather than only off-the-shelf packages. |

| SPAM |
Sending multiple, sometimes thousands, of unwelcome messages to a newsgroup or mailing list to promote a commercial product or Web site. |

| SPIM |
SPIM is a new form of internet SPAM delivered to users through (IM) Instant Messaging programs like Microsoft Messenger (MSN) instead of via email. SPIM is generated by automated ‘bots’ that are designed to simulate instant messaging users to efficiently SPAM messages. This new SPAM medium is quickly reaching more and more instant messaging users throughout the internet. SPIM like SPAM comes in a variety of forms, such as pornography, medications/drugs, fake degrees and money making schemes. |

| SQL |
Structured Query Language (SQL) - A language used by relational databases to query, update, and manage data. Most industrial-strength and many smaller database applications can be addressed and accessed online and offline using SQL. The acronym is pronounced as "sequel" for Structured Query Language, the language developed by IBM Corporation for processing data contained in mainframe computer databases. |

| SSL |
A method of encrypting data as it is transferred between a browser and Internet server. Useful for the transfer of sensitive information like credit card details. |

| Static data |
Static data is when the information availble is embedded into its host page or screen interface, in effect it can become stale as nothing is to change without it being manually updated. Static data is quite the opposite to dynamic data websites/applications that are fed their data/information from a central data source.
For example if this website contained static data and that data appeared on several different pages, we would have to amend and update each page seperately, which can become a time consuming exercise. |

Technology that allows to play audio or video while it is still downloading. |

| Surfing |
Browsing the Web, just looking around. |

| Sysop |
System operator. The person who performs physical operations on a computer system. |
